Advent Concert

"Christmas in the Trenches 1914"

(Noël dans les Tranchées 1914)

in the Protestant Temple in Saintes
at 5.00pm on Sunday 30th November 2014.

The theme this year is "Christmas in the Trenches 1914", a time exactly one hundred years ago, when the soldiers had hoped that the war would be over, and there were many stories of unofficial truces, when British, French & German soldiers "fraternised" on Christmas Day itself. We have found letters, poems and other writings from the time, which will be read by Wendy Gleaves of EM 17 & Jacques Blanc of Les Amitiés Saintes / Salisbury. Our choir, OK Chorale, and other musicians will perform choral & instrumental music, French, English & German, including  some original arrangements & compositions by our director of music.
Wilfred Owen, one of the most famous of English war poets, wrote about "the pity of war" - this concert will indeed illustrate this, but the overall message is one of peace, hope, forgiveness & tranquility.
The concert is free, but there will be a retiring collection to defray the heating & lighting costs, and also those of the mulled wine & mince pies which will be served after the concert.
EM 17 would like to thank Bridget Brennan of the association Saintes / Salisbury,  M et Mme Freddy Chalard of the temple and les Amis du Temple for their help in making this concert possible.
